Blog reviewing books for boys. I am hoping this blog will inspire my students to read more and maybe get them interested in writing their own reviews. It's called The Last Word because I usually like to read the last few words of a book, first, and I always like to have the last word when I am talking about books.

Literature Circle Assignment: F Block
For three weeks you have discussed your book in your literature circle groups, but for your final assignment, you will be working on your own. Please post a comment about the book you read for class. Post a brief paragraph of 50-100 words about what you liked about the book or didn't like. Be specific. Did you like the main character, did you like the conflict he had to deal with, did you like the style of how the book was written? Be sure to explain why. If you didn't like something about the book, please explain that too. Don't give away the entire plot of the story or too many secrets, but tell enough so that it will inspire someone else to pick up this book or not. All F Block students should post a comment by Wednesday, November 10th.

where The Red Fern Grows was an amazing book. This book is about a boy who has a burning passion to get a dog. he finaly works hard for 2 years and raises enough money for the dogs he could not wait to get them and walks to town to get them. th people in the town are mean but all he wants is his dogs and he goes back home. The boys name is Billy and he names his dogs old dan and little ann. He trains the dogs to be the best coon hunters all around the Ozark moutains. The dogs work like they are one dog whatever one does the other helps it out. The dogs go though some close calls and some hard coons to catch who are old, wise, who have outsmarted dogs before. Little ann is the brains of the bunch she always can find lost sents and not give up. Old dan is very muscular and he always barks and balls after coons to catch them,he would give up his life for billy and little ann just as they would for him. Billy is a loving owner who never gives up on his dogs and he would die for his dogs. This story about a boy and his love for his dogs and death at the saddest coast, and a story about a red fern that only an angel can plant and it never dies. This book is amazing and as Jhonny would say this book reminds you how to be golden i would recomend this to any living thing on the earth. this book may make you want to put it in the freezer.P.S beat book ever

The book I read for literature circles, That was then, this is now was (what I would call) an “okay” book. First, I disliked almost every character in this book. I especially disliked the main character Bryon. I found that Bryon and his best friend/brother Mark were both trouble makers very much like the Socs described in S.E. Hinton’s novel, The Outsiders. What I did find interesting was the conflict the main character had to cope with. The conflict (and main point of the story) was that as Bryon and Mark grew up and aged, they grew more and more apart and different from each other. For example, in the story, Bryon (who used to cause mayhem and get into big trouble with Mark) began to become much more mature and also started spending more time with his girlfriend Cathy while Mark continued to go his “old ways”. As the story went on, more tension developed between these two characters. Finally, in the end all of this tension came to life in an event that caused a catastrophic and dark ending. Not only is this book about Mark and Bryon, but it also focused on a very shady character named M&M. While M&M isn’t a main character, he does come into play a lot at the end of the book. M&M brought out quite a few secrets about Mark that bring out the worst in Bryon. Another thing I did like about this book was it’s writing style. I felt that this book was much better written than The Outsiders. The descriptions were much more vivid and the characters more interesting. Also, the mysterious and sad element to this novel makes it somewhat of a “quick” read. Overall, I think this book is worth reading and I think it gives you a lot to think about.

In my literature circle group, I read Stand Tall. The main character in the book (who was not my favorite character I have ever read about), Tree, was often a pessimistic person, and he always exaggerates over the conflicts going on. Tree is extremely tall for his age, and is often picked on for this reason. There are two conflicts, Tree has to cope with his parents divorce, and his grandfather has to learn how to walk again. Although I will not reveal the details, I feel as if the ending is unrealistically perfect. The writing quality is great, but is pulled down by its weak and uninteresting plot. Overall, I would rate this book a 3 out of ten. I would not recommend it to a friend, or even an enemy.

Great comments, guys! Even if we disagree on the quality of our books, I appreciate your honesty and detailed comments. You have set excellent standards for the rest of our class comments. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteIn my book, Stand Tall, I did not like the character. He had many difficulties in this book, whether it was his dog dying? him crying, or his grandfather with one leg.His parents got divorced so everytime he saw a family, eating dinner or just walking around he would cry.Tree at the end became less irritating and I almost started to like him, but then it ended.
ReplyDeleteI would not reccomend this to anyone.

I read the book Tangerine by Edward Bloor. I thought that it was a great book, but it was not perfect. The main conflict is that Pual Fisher, the main character, has a cruel brother Erik. Erik is a football star, and thus gets most of if not all the parent’s attention. Paul loathes Erik, even saying the only sadness he would feel if Erik died would be that Erik’s mysterious secret would die with him. Paul is also battling for his parents attention, mostly by becoming a soccer player with incredible skill at goalkeeping, despite being leagaly blind. I liked the emotions that the characters potrayed and I thought that they were pretty realistic. The characters were very well thought out overall, although I thought that the cruelty of Erik was a little too much. My only problem with this book is that I prefer fighting action to sports action. Other than that, I would give this book 5 stars.

I read Stand Tall for Lit Circle, and I was not satisfied. The book was written well, but lacked a good plot. Tree, the protagonist, was a very tall( I'm talking six foot three) 7th grader, and a hard character to love, or at the least like. He was bullied for his height and had family divorce troubles. His grandfather Leo, a Vietnam veteran, was having his leg amputated, and had to learn to walk again, which is done at an unrealistic pace in the story. I think the plot was out of place, the parents are divorced but the omly real sign of this is one fight in the book. The ending of this less than good story was totally cheesy and unrealistic. I kind of wish Tree had just stood up for himself and said " Enough, I'm six foot three, leave me alone!" I give this book a grade of D+.

Where the Red Fern grows is a fantastic book. In my opinion this book is better than the outsiders. The main characters of the story is Billy, Old Dan, and Little Ann. The main characters love each other so much. My favorite part of the story is when billy has to catch his first coon with his dogs. He eventually has to cut down the biggest Sycamore tree in the river bottoms to get the coon in the branches of the humungous tree. I hope you go out and get this book. (P.S This book is not for the faint of heart.) Ryan McKeever
ReplyDeleteI read Tangerine by Edward Bloor for my Lit Circle. I have mixed opinions about this book, but overall it was pretty good(like a B+). The main conflict in Tangerine is Paul Fisher versus his brother Erik. Erik is very cruel to Paul, and has harassed him physically and emotionally. Another factor towards their feud is that Erik gets about 90% of their parents attention because he is a star place kicker on the football team. Paul plays soccer and is very good at it but football is just a lot more popular than soccer in the Fisher household. I think the author did a great job getting a characters emotion through in this book. He also added suspense to this book to make it more dramatic. Overall, Tangerine was a great book.
ReplyDeleteI read Tangerine by Edward Bloor for the Lit circle reading. Tagerine was a very good book overall. There are some parts in this book that are kind of confusing.Overall I give it a rating on a B. Tangerine is about a boy named Paul Fisher and his family. His mother and dad are freaks and treat him alot different then his brother Erik Fisher.Erik Fisher is a star football kicker and his dad gives him all the attention.Paul on the other hand plays Soccer but he gets no attention.Erik Fisher and Paul Fisher do not get along like other siblings do.Paul Fisher is blind and he tells people that he got blind by looking at an eclipse but there is something fishy about that story. The Fisher family have a tough life since they moved from Houston to Tangerine.Paul especially has a tough time in the beginning of the book.Erick also does some really cruel things throughout the book.Read the book to find out more about all the drama in this book!

I read the book That Was Then This Is Now by SE Hinton. This was a good chocie of read after being the follow-up to The Outsiders. This book is about Bryon and Mark, two best friends who have been like brothers since childhood. But Bryon and Mark are growing up, girls are getting into Bryon's life a lot more lately. Mark is up to lots of starnge stuff lately. This was a great read and I encourage everyone to read That Was The This Is Now.

Tangerine is a great book. Some characters are Paul fisher, Tino, Victor, Erick Fisher, Henry D, and Aurther Bauer. The main character for the book is Paul fisher. He and his family moved from Texas to Tangerine, Florida. Paul and his family live at Lake Windsor and Paul and his brother Erick go to Lake Windsor middle and High school. Erick goes to high school and Paul is in Middle school. He gets picked on a lot because he had a little accident a while back so he has to where these really thick glasses after the accident so everyone picks on him. He goes out for soccer but he can’t play because his mom filled out a form for his eyesight because he legally blind but really is not. A sink hole occurs and takes out all the portables that the seventh grade classes were in. Paul was not in the classes at the time but he ran into the potables and pulled people out of them. After this almost all the portables were destroyed so he goes to Tangerine Middle for the rest of the year. When Paul goes to Tangerine Middle School he changes. If this book sound interesting to you then pick up a copy and start reading. I would also recommend this book to everybody. It’s a great book and you will never want to put it down.

The book I read was Tangerine by Edward Bloor. I really liked this book because it was like real life. There was more than one conflict, like most times in life, and they were reasonable conflicts. Some of the conflicts were fighting among parents, friends, and brothers. Some other conflicts were moving from town to town, changing schools, which we can all relate to, and trying out, making, and getting cut from sports teams. The main character is Paul Fischer and his crazy family. His parents pay more attention to his athletically gifted brother, Erik. Paul and Erik butt heads a lot. The family moved from Houston to Tangerine, FL. Then Paul transfers schools and makes his soccer team, but gets cut because he is legally blind and that is an insurance liability. Then, due to a natural disaster, transfers schools again. This is where the story really picks up and then a few other things happen, and the book is over., To find out what happens read this book! Incase your like Ms. Guiney, the last word is Dawn.

The book I read was the book That Was Then This Is Now by S.E Hinton. This book was an average O.K book. Although this book had the same setting as the outsiders, the only thing they had in common was that ponyboy was in them.
ReplyDeleteThis book is about two brothers named Bryon and Mark and how slowly as the years go by they are starting to seperate from each other. Bryon, Mark and friends face diffecult and crazy challenges and meet some strange people along the way. Some of the characters in this story may get on my nerves but the story-line is great and well put together. Another weird/dark character in this story that has an imporant role is a boy called M&M. I would recommend this book to anybody who is looking for an "easy-read". Over all, I would gave this book a B- . Read the book to find out more!

The book I read was Stand Tall. This book can have its ups and downs. Tree, the main character in the story was very sad throughout the story. Every little thing reminded him about his parents.Tree is not very good at sports and relies on his grandfather Leo. Leo and him really connect because they like the same things. Tree and his grandfather like to build and find mechanics of certain things like pens, pencils, etc. This book is not recommended to all people. If you like sad stories this is the book for you. Tree in general really needs to control his self esteem. He is too overwhelmed with his surroundings. Without a doubt, when Tree needs to stand up and have everyone back off because he had been bullied he will. This book is not very confusing. This story also has many touching and deep sentences that if you think about you will realize that Tree has no where to go. This book was an alright book... from 1-10 I would rate it a 6.

The book I read was That Was Then, This is Now. This book is action packed and hardcore. The main characters were Mark and Byron. These two (brothers) have their UPS and downs the whole book. These kids play rough, they hustle, get in fights, and hotwire cars. Byron mostly uses girls in the story except when he meets this girl Cathy. He mostly goes out with Cathy the whole book except for the end of the book...... Cathy's little brother m and m is a weird but interesting kid, until one day they find him and he is not so good. Read on to find out about the dramatic ending. Companion book to the Outsiders. Great book, get your copy today.

The book I read was Where the Red Fern Grows. This is a great book that is about a boy named Billy and his dogs, Old Dan and Lil' Ann, going through life hunting coons. I liked Billy because of his determination to get his dogs and how much he cared about them. Old Dan was a strong, athletic dog and Lil' Ann was one of the smartest hunting dogs out there. Together they were the greatest great hunting pair and were very loyal to Billy. I would recommend this book to anyone.
